Charles River Shanghai Facility Receives AAALAC, CCAC and SLAC Accreditations

Leading contract research organization achieves regulatory milestones

WILMINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 7, 2009-- Charles River Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: CRL), today announced the Company’s new Shanghai facility received accreditation from the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) and the Shanghai Laboratory Animal Commission (SLAC). The AAALAC, CCAC and SLAC accreditations confirm Charles River’s ability to provide clients with superior service in a regulatory compliant environment.

AAALAC Recognizes Humane Care of Research Models

AAALAC International is a private, nonprofit organization that promotes the humane treatment of animals in science through voluntary accreditation and assessment programs. More than 770 companies, universities, hospitals, government agencies and other research institutions in 31 countries have earned AAALAC accreditation, demonstrating their commitment to responsible animal care and use.

The Charles River AAALAC report highlighted the Shanghai facility’s strong commitment to its animal care and use program, the state-of-the-art facility and equipment, as well as the dedicated and highly trained staff.

CCAC Acknowledges Veterinary Services

The CCAC is the Canadian national organization responsible for setting and maintaining standards for the care and use of animals in science. The Charles River Shanghai CCAC report highlighted the facility’s commendable Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), outstanding veterinary services, as well as its institutional education and training programs.

SLAC Praises Animal Welfare Policies

SLAC is the Shanghai regulatory body responsible for the daily administration and supervision of animals in medical research. In the SLAC audit, Charles River was commended for its excellent animal welfare policies and procedures, comprehensive emergency plan and training programs.
